They're coming for me. Slowly but surely. Trudging on without a hurry. Perhaps its my scent or an aura of life, but I'm hiding alone. Well, except for this knife. But I can't fight them all, it would do little good. One dull piece of metal with a handle of wood versus an army of fingernails, of teeth and of fists. It would all end much sooner if I'd just slit my wrists. But the death of a coward is not one for me. My own brazen pride scoffs at such simplicity. I can hear them now, moaning and crying for flesh. And now comes the stench of their rot far from fresh. They're coming so close yet, I'm so far away. My now fearful mind wandering back to long distant days. Memories of all my loved ones dance fondly in my head. Although I know (rather grimly) that they're all surely dead. Or perhaps my sweet dear ones formed part of their flock. My own mind's macabre theory gives a sharp, potent, shock. But I refuse such a fate (ever the obstinate mule). Hubris wins the debate (though I still play the fool). Now they're breaking through the windows. They're limping down the hall. They're clawing at my door. They're smashing down the wall. What good is a hero if he's just going to fall? But as bites overtake me and death conquers all, a numbness sets in and my mind becomes dull...perhaps I'm not the hero...maybe that was my flaw...
